Chelsea One Bedroom

Rich mahogany paneled door beside warm gold damask wallpaper with white trim detail

Enter a world of extraordinary detail

The proportions of the hardware and custom mahogany door are rather perfectly suited to the classic 1920s building in which this apartment is located. The hand-stenciled wallpaper coupled with an unexpectedly robust & glossy door casing suggests a connection to places far from Manhattan.

Close-up of a corner of a wall with a painting of a reclining nude woman on the wall. The painting is signed in the bottom left corner. Below the painting is a wooden console table with a carved ornamental support, on which there are two decorative objects: a carved round box and a small bowl. The background wall has orange textured wallpaper with a subtle pattern.

The curvaceousness of that custom console echoes the female form slung in the hammock above.

The early industrial character of the phenolic top supported by such an obviously non-industrial hand-carved corbel is a complex and unexpected pairing.

The very rectilinear ultra-contemporary stainless steel umbrella stand beyond the console, atop a black leather tile floor (not shown), all serve to broaden temporal connection to various time periods.

Dining and Living Area

Elegant dining room with carved wood shutters, capiz chandelier, and walnut table with white roses

A young hospitality executive with Caribbean roots and a penchant for classic world travel inspired a global approach, a romantic global approach.

Built-in bookshelves framed by ornate carved wood shutters displaying books, photos, and ceramics

A Capiz shell pendant, hand-carved shutters, and natural cane-mesh panels set the tone.

Warm living room with navy sectional, modern white chairs, and large framed giraffe artwork on gold walls

More hand-carvings, silver-leafed ceiling, grasscloth on the walls, fur throw and Peter Beard's work in Africa are all very much on point given the exotic theme.

The Kitchen

Kitchen with dark wood cabinets, a black countertop, a stainless steel sink, a chrome faucet, a tiled backsplash, and a wall with wood paneling. There are shelves with dishes behind glass cabinet doors, stainless steel containers on the counter, and a stove partially visible.

Far more than a butler's pantry, the functionality of a much larger kitchen is skillfully packed into this adorable kitchenette.

Kitchen cabinet shelf with jars of spices and herbs, cups, mugs, a lemon, and kitchen utensils, next to a chalkboard with a recipe written on it.
  • “Within Chelsea's London Terrace complex there are approximately 1,700 apartments and I assure you that none of their kitchens are as charming or as well-equipped as this one.”

The Bedroom

A bedroom with a white bed, four pillows, a red wallpaper with gold bamboo design, and beige curtains on both sides of the bed. There are two small bedside tables with lamps and decorative items.
Decorative interior corner with wooden lattice doors, red walls, bamboo plant mural, and a dark glossy vase.
A vintage wooden chest with gold hardware, topped with decorative items including a black vase with pink orchids, a small silver object, a black clock, a pop of red beads, and a bronze sculpture, against a background of red and beige walls.

The exquisite pair of 1930’s Hermes leather trunks picked up at a Paris flea market perform perfectly as bedside tables for a sophisticated world traveler.

  • “Incredibly thorough solutions and consistently outstanding results.”

    — the client

The gentle arch of custom shoe shelves hidden behind closed doors and the Deco-inspired built-up stone detail behind the tub spout very intentionally relate to the building’s glamorous beginnings which happened to coincide with the heyday of early world travel.

Pair of vintage heeled shoes with open toes, multicolored knitted design, on a dark shelf amidst other footwear.
A bathroom with a tiled wall, candles surrounding a bathtub, and various bottles and natural items on the dark countertop.
