Chelsea One Bedroom
Enter a world of extraordinary detail
The proportions of the hardware and custom mahogany door are rather perfectly suited to the classic 1920s building in which this apartment is located. The hand-stenciled wallpaper coupled with an unexpectedly robust & glossy door casing suggests a connection to places far from Manhattan.
The curvaceousness of that custom console echoes the female form slung in the hammock above.
The early industrial character of the phenolic top supported by such an obviously non-industrial hand-carved corbel is a complex and unexpected pairing.
The very rectilinear ultra-contemporary stainless steel umbrella stand beyond the console, atop a black leather tile floor (not shown), all serve to broaden temporal connection to various time periods.
Dining and Living Area
A young hospitality executive with Caribbean roots and a penchant for classic world travel inspired a global approach, a romantic global approach.
A Capiz shell pendant, hand-carved shutters, and natural cane-mesh panels set the tone.
More hand-carvings, silver-leafed ceiling, grasscloth on the walls, fur throw and Peter Beard's work in Africa are all very much on point given the exotic theme.
The Kitchen
Far more than a butler's pantry, the functionality of a much larger kitchen is skillfully packed into this adorable kitchenette.
-
“Within Chelsea's London Terrace complex there are approximately 1,700 apartments and I assure you that none of their kitchens are as charming or as well-equipped as this one.”
The Bedroom
The exquisite pair of 1930’s Hermes leather trunks picked up at a Paris flea market perform perfectly as bedside tables for a sophisticated world traveler.
-
“Incredibly thorough solutions and consistently outstanding results.”
— the client
The gentle arch of custom shoe shelves hidden behind closed doors and the Deco-inspired built-up stone detail behind the tub spout very intentionally relate to the building’s glamorous beginnings which happened to coincide with the heyday of early world travel.
